To be able to advance beyond node 7 (near the hut) one has to finish the quest The Mountain Pass.
Fiery Rubes for the quest Ice the Fiery Rubes! are a very rare spawn on nodes 13-15 (~2% chance).
The shortcut (dashed road) can be unlocked permanently from the north-western side (one node from the merchant) for 10,000 metal.
